"Leaders are managers, but managers are not necessarily leaders" Before arguing for this statement we have to know the definition for both.
A manager is a person who manages four important functions of management like planning, organizing, leading and controlling.Leader is a person who influences group of people towards to achieve goals and objectives.We can identify some differences between manager and leader.
- Managers normally oversees the current process nicely.But leaders want to create future in the organization.
- Managers normally thinks how to execution of things ,but leaders more focus for think new ideas.
- Most of the time managers comfortable with control and leaders always welcomes risk.
- Managers need solution for the problem as much as possibly and leaders sees problem as opportunities is patient.
- Mangers are more consider about procedure and leader are more consider about substance trumps.
- Normally managers plan short term things and leaders plan long term things.
- Managers follow the company vision and leaders communicate and deliver the vision.
- Managers have subordinates and leaders have followers.
According to the above highlighted differences between managers and leaders some common features among them.Normally managers and leaders are coaching and developing subordinates,acting as an role model and creating a climate withing the work place.
According to the above mentioned differences and common features of managers and leaders we can say all the leaders are managers,but we can not consider that all the managers are leaders. Some times most of the managers tend to be leaders if they carry out the leadership responsibilities of the management. For example communication,motivation,providing inspiration and guidance and encouraging employees to achieve high level of productivity.
But in the practically not all the managers can be considered as leaders .Because some managers have poor leadership qualities.Employees follows managers orders because they obligated to do so.Normally managers main focus is achieve organizational goal and objectives.They did not consider more about other things.
Leader can be any one of the company he doesn't need to hold any management positions of the company.Not like managers ,leaders are followed by the subordinates because of their personality, behavior and belief.Leaders are not only concern with organizational goals they also concern concern with subordinate goals and objectives as well as their satisfaction.And also there is a common statement that I have mentioned previously about the differences between managers and leaders "Managers have subordinates and leaders have followers".
In finally best managers have good leadership activities.They encourage their subordinate to achieve organizational goal and objectives.And also some managers have good vision like leaders .Great managers have leadership skills it doesn't mean that all the leaders are in management role.Some times you have to act like both the managers and leaders role.I think its depend on the situation According to the given situation our role may be changed ,It will be manager role or leadership role.
